Frequency Separation Tutorial

  1. Open image in camera raw
  2. Minimal edits such as decreasing the highlights, boosting the contrast 
  3. Model already has nice skin, so zoom in and get rid of blemishes first
  4. Create new layer and label Blemishes
  5. Take the regular healing brush...not spot healing brush
  6. If you can’t see the blemishes, open a black and white layer
  7. Select healing brush and blemish layer and select only current layer and below sampling
  8. Delete the black and white adjustment layer
  9. Check you blemishes layer, if you went too far, erase
  10. Merge layers by clicking Command+ OPTION + SHIFT + E
  11. Complete frequency separation.
 In high frequencies we have the skin texture, in low frequencies we have the skin color and tone.

  1. Make a copy of the merged layer. Label one COLOR and one TEXTURE
  2. Turn off the texture layer and go to the color layer
  3. Go to Filter, Blur, Gaussian blur
  4. Change radius to .1
  5. Increase it just to the point where the skin texture goes away
  6. Should stay at 9.0
  7. Select the Texture layer and go to image, apply image
  8. SUBTRACT Color, Scale, offset 2, 128
  9. Change the blend mode of the texture layer to Linear light
  10. Make a group of those two layers. Command g
  11. Create a layer between color and texture
  12. Use paint brush under 2 flow
  13. Eyedropper 31 by 31
  14. Resculpt the skin by the paintbrush. Rename the layer nose
  15. New layer eye
