Frequency Separation Tutorial

Open image in camera raw Minimal edits such as decreasing the highlights, boosting the contrast  Model already has nice skin, so zoom in and get rid of blemishes first Create new layer and label Blemishes Take the regular healing brush...not spot healing brush If you can’t see the blemishes, open a black and white layer Select healing brush and blemish layer and select only current layer and below sampling Delete the black and white adjustment layer Check you blemishes layer, if you went too far, erase Merge layers by clicking Command+ OPTION + SHIFT + E Complete frequency separation.  In high frequencies we have the skin texture, in low frequencies we have the skin color and tone. Make a copy of the merged layer. Final Project Guidelines Due December 11th

Total Points: 400 Due Date: December 11th What is due: 15 prints and ONE multimedia component and a 1-page project statement. (Also due is a short presentation, due November 14th in class) When are critiques? : Every Thursday from here on out, except Thanksgiving week, and we will present on Tuesday. For the remainder of the semester you are free (!) to work on a project of your own design,  which will make up roughly 40% of your grade for the semester .  Your work on this project must be unified conceptually, formally, and verbally. You have to elaborate your ideas, in other words, in visual, oral, and written form. Your work, however, can literally take ANY form, provided you are using as base material the skills and equipment discussed in class.   The point is that this work should be something you are truly excited about and something that will sustain you for the rest of the semester. Presentation Guidepoints Due November 14th

For Thursday's class, present us with a visual pitch for your final projects. This will entail the following: 1. Pitch us your final project concept 2. WHY are you interested in this? What are your driving ideas behind this? 3. Visually, show us what your images will look like. 4. Tell us what your process will be. (Lighting, locations, subjects) 5. Show us 4 artists who are either A) doing work similar visually to yours or B) working with the same ideas and concepts are yours. On Thursday we will present our work to each other so that we have a good foundation for critiques the FOLLOWING Thursday.

Blending Images Photoshop Notes

1. Open up street Image and use the crop tool and content-aware to resize, if needed. 2. Open the second image of girl swimming into that same document. (Convert this to a Smart Object to avoid resolution issues from resizing.) 3. Move girl to match up horizon in street photo at lower portion of image. 4. Make a selection of the girl and click on the mask button to create a mask. 5. Use the brush tool and paint with white on the mask to reveal more of the water around her. 6. COMMAND + J to make a copy of this layer 7. Select the bottom layer and RENAME it HARD LIGHT 8. Change the Blending mode of this layer to HARD LIGHT 9. Make sure you're on the mask and using the brush tool, paint more of the water back in. 10. Change the opacity of this layer to 65% 11. Select the HARD LIGHT layer and the copy of this layer by holding down shift to select both. Then COMMAND +G to group these layers. (This is done so any adjustments will affect both) 12. Constructing A Digital World Due November 5th Critique: One 16X24 print…. Yes, we’re printing BIG this time! Points: 200 Video: Not this time Requirements: Minimum of three images composited into a final piece (Can use additional found images if you have met the 3 images shot requirement) OBJECTIVE: For this assignment, you will either photograph yourself or someone else and construct a digital reality using composited images. The theme is up to you, but the image must manipulate Scale in some fashion.   In this project, you will be printing BIG and as such, the viewer will read everything in the image as intentional, and it should be. The background, the lighting, the colors in the image, the gestures of the person or people, should all be carefully considered in regards to communicating your concept. Consider how the image changes if it feels very fantastical and staged, versus if the construction is more subtle.  Experiment and have fun. You have...
