Natural Lighting Assignment: DUE Tuesday, September 3rd.
Assignments Due September 3rd:
A) Photography in the News written response
B) Textbook reading: ART PHOTOGRAPHY NOW chapters, INTRODUCTION and PORTRAIT
Exploring Light part 1: Natural Light
DUE: SEPTEMBER 3 bring digital files to class for digital critique
Best 6 photographs as digital files (we aren’t printing this assignment)
Bring one short (very) video clip component.
OVERVIEW:
Natural Light: edited to best 6
Take photographs outside at dawn, mid morning, noon, mid afternoon, sunset and the blue hour (after sunset). Bring in your 6 best images (one for each of the times of day) A tripod will be needed for the early and late shots due to the longer exposure time. Really consider the light, not just the time of day. Especially the blue hour can be tricky as it doesn’t last as long. Consider how to make the most interesting photograph in a particular type of light. Work with the light and use it to your advantage. For this assignment and all assignments in the future, I want you to also include a short video piece. This is up to your discretion, but choose a piece that is necessary for the format.
Experiment! There is no theme on this project so try a wide variety of scenarios.
Note: Using a tripod is a requirement. It will help you from needing to crank up your ISO too high (and causing image noise). You should get one, but for now, you can check one out from VRL.
Technical objectives:
Making the photographs: exposure controls, tripod use, basic editing workflow.
Creative considerations:
How does time of day affect the color of light? How does this affect the overall mood and emotion of the image? How do you problem solve to make interesting images in a variety of lighting conditions? How does your video clip stack up? Why is video a better format for this clip than a still image?
